Linguistic anthropology is one of four traditional subfields of anthropology—the study of humans—the others being sociocultural anthropology, biological anthropology, and archaeology. Linguistic anthropologists study the use of language in relation to human cultures and societies. Pursuing a PhD in linguistic anthropology can lead to a wide range of careers, including in academia, government, NGOs, businesses, and research.
“Full funding” is a financial aid package for full-time students that includes full tuition remission and an annual stipend or salary during the entire program, usually 3-6 years. Funding usually comes with the expectation that students will teach or complete research in their field. Not all universities fully fund their doctoral students, so researching the financial aid offerings of many different programs, including small and lesser-known schools both in the U.S. and abroad, is essential.

Yale University Fully Funded PhD Sociocultural and Linguistic Anthropology
Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, provides a fully funded PhD program in Sociocultural and Linguistic Anthropology. The program is designed to offer students training in various topics and areas intersecting ethnography and contemporary social and cultural theory. Upon acceptance into the PhD program, students receive an official offer letter from Yale’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The letter is a contractual document that outlines the funding package for PhD studies. Typically, students are guaranteed two years of university fellowships, teaching assistantships, and dissertation fellowships (UDF) for writing their dissertation.
New York University Fully Funded PhD in Linguistic Anthropology
New York University in New York City provides a fully funded PhD program in Linguistic Anthropology. The program focuses on several areas of study, such as social interaction, multilingualism, language ideology, linguistic minorities, language and media, language contact and social change, and language and political economy. All students admitted to the PhD program are funded by the Henry Mitchell MacCracken Program for five years. MacCracken-supported students receive full tuition and fee remission, a living stipend, and NYU health insurance.
University of Notre Dame Fully Funded PhD in Anthropology
The University of Notre Dame, located in Notre Dame, Indiana, offers a fully-funded PhD program in Anthropology. The program has two tracks, namely the main track of PhD in Anthropology, which covers biological anthropology, archaeology, linguistic anthropology, and sociocultural anthropology, and another track that focuses on Anthropology and Peace Studies. Students accepted into the Anthropology doctoral program at Notre Dame are provided full funding for five years, including full tuition, a twelve-month stipend for living expenses, and some yearly conference support.
Stanford University Fully Funded PhD in Anthropology
Stanford University, located in Stanford, California, provides a fully funded PhD program in Anthropology, which offers two tracks – Archaeology and Culture and Society. The Archaeology track includes subfields such as cities, gender and sexuality, and materiality. On the other hand, the Culture and Society track is ideal for students interested in linguistic anthropology, culture and mind, medical anthropology, and global political economy. The Anthropology Department extends 5 years of financial support to PhD students.
Northwestern University Fully Funded PhD in Anthropology
Northwestern University, located in Evanston, Illinois, provides a fully funded PhD program in Anthropology. The graduate program in Anthropology at Northwestern encourages the diversity of the discipline by facilitating intellectual dialogue between various humanistic and scientific approaches. The research and graduate training program integrates major anthropological subfields, including Archaeology, Biological Anthropology, Cultural Anthropology, and Linguistic Anthropology. PhD students usually enroll as full-time students and receive full funding, which includes a stipend and tuition scholarship. University of Pennsylvania Fully Funded PhD in Anthropology
The University of Pennsylvania, located in Philadelphia, offers a fully funded PhD program in Anthropology. The PhD program provides rigorous training in one of the four major subfields of Anthropology: Anthropological Archeology, Biological Anthropology, Cultural Anthropology, and Linguistic Anthropology. PhD holders are equipped with the skills to conduct independent research at a professional level of competence in their chosen subfield. All full-time PhD applicants are accepted with the Benjamin Franklin Fellowship, which includes the cost of tuition, fees, health insurance, and an annual stipend.
University of California Fully Funded PhD in Anthropology
The University of California San Diego, located in San Diego, California, offers a fully funded PhD program in Anthropology. The program provides the following specializations: Anthropological Archaeology, Biological Anthropology, Sociocultural Anthropology, Psychological/Medical Anthropology, and Linguistic Anthropology. Graduate students are provided with financial support for up to five years. During the first four years, students receive full payment of tuition fees, a stipend/salary, and non-resident supplemental tuition for their first year. In the fifth year, graduate students receive a one-year research stipend for a research fellowship.
City University of New York Fully Funded PhD in Anthropology
The City University of New York, located in New York City, provides a fully funded PhD program in Anthropology. The Anthropology Program at the Graduate Center offers a diverse range of anthropological knowledge, with over 50 full-time faculty members working across the four subfields of the discipline. If you apply to the Graduate Center’s doctoral programs, you will automatically be considered for institutional funding packages that last for five years. The financial aid offerings, which include fellowships, tuition awards, and assistantships, are primarily based on merit.
Brown University Fully Funded PhD in Anthropology
Brown University, located in Providence, Rhode Island, offers a fully funded PhD program in Anthropology. The Anthropology Department’s graduate program at Brown encourages diverse doctoral research agendas in sociocultural anthropology, anthropological archaeology, and linguistic anthropology. All students admitted to Brown’s PhD program in Anthropology are offered a generous 5-year funding package that covers tuition and provides an annual stipend. Funding for a sixth year is also available through the Graduate School.
